  Sister may have had a slight heart attack, do I text her?

  so my cousin phoned and told me my jw sister was taken to hospital with chest pains and it may have been a slight heart attack or possibly she's starting with angina.

  now as some of you know my sisters and brother have had little to do with me for 29 years.

  we've met at funerals, or arranged them, but i just thought today what if she did die?

  I'm always dreaming -- like last night -- about my kids and their mom whom I never see or hear from. What do I do? I remember Melanie Hamilton Wilkes (Gone With The Wind). When Rhett sent Scarlett to that party dressed in red, he knew what reactions she would get from the party goers. Dirty looks, mutterings, thinly veiled contempt, . . .

  True to form, however, Melanie walks up to Scarlett with a cheerful greeting and brings her round to the guests, including Ashley's sister India.

  'Say hello to our darling Scarlett, India!' Well, as best I recall. Despite Scarlett's hatred for Melanie, Melanie -- the only truly kind person I've ever known, said Rhett -- didn't lower herself to the level of others.

  i really miss my childhood home, which we left in 1960. dad sold it for some 12,000 dollars; it recently sold for somewhere under 1.5 million.

  it's only a tiny bungalow but in a prosperous bay area town, not too far from san francisco, california.. the art and literature that are so important to me -- and for many others of us -- got their start in my heart and mind here in the california mountains.

  Good morning, smiddy, LisaRose, truthseeker, snugglebunny, and stillin.

  Thanks for sharing memories of your earlier days. Really quite bittersweet, particularly when you return as an adult -- your home has changed, or it's gone altogether. Sorry to hear about the latter.

  Lots of moves for many of us. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing my parents moved from here to there to here again just to save a few dollars on rent. I imagine rent was 40 or 50 dollars a month then. Dad drove a bread truck and Mom cleaned houses and child sat for a dollar a day per kid, so there was minimal income.

  Yeah, the donut's on the house (the missing house?!?!?!?).

  When I went to my 50-year high school reunion a year ago, I stayed with my childhood friend who inherited the house he grew up in. I went nextdoor to my old house and met the young couple who bought it. They were fascinated by my stories and loved the '50s photos I had brought to show them. To the extent they could, they vowed to restore it as close as possible to original.

  Thanks, charonsdog, for sharing that bit of childhood.

  I believe we do romanticize our early lives. Otherwise, parts of it would've been intolerable, what we've blocked out. Too bad about the 'hood going to the dogs. Seen that far too many times. You must have been really deflated by that. Sorry.

  Your childhood was different from mine in that you were already JWs, an entirely other way of living from us who were just back calls or Bible studies -- "people of good will" -- as we were called then. No commitment.

  I really miss my childhood home, which we left in 1960. Dad sold it for some 12,000 dollars; it recently sold for somewhere under 1.5 million. It's only a tiny bungalow but in a prosperous Bay Area town, not too far from San Francisco, California.

  The art and literature that are so important to me -- and for many others of us -- got their start in my heart and mind here in the California mountains. The reason I'm posting an interior shot of my house (found it online, totally remodeled and staged) is because it was the back porch and my bedroom.

  Outside the window you'll see a eucalyptus tree (HEY, SMIDDY!) and mountain range. Both were my early inspiration toward the artistic depiction of trees and mountains on canvas, with oil paints. Even as a tiny guy, I was fascinated by trees and mountains. I just stared and stared out the window, wondering about the houses and people on that mountain . . . I was sick for a while in 3rd grade, and I wrote a letter to my classmates about my observations. Weird kid.

  Well, this is where I got my start.

  While it was impossible to see everything in the 20 days I was on the coast -- Noosaville, the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Musgrave Island, etc. -- you have helped me understand it from a native's viewpoint. Sad about the indigenous beasties being threatened by the interloper man.

  Yes, let's find some answers. I don't think it's gonna be Jehovah's Kingdom!

  From my tale, "It is Getting Dark."

  It is getting dark.

  A stiff wind is coming in off the bay and the eucalyptus trees are swaying. The two-story house next door does not block my view of the sea; it is set back a bit. What I can see is partially obscured by a stand of trees. The gentle back-and-forth motion of those graceful eucalyptus causes the light pouring through my window to cut in and out.

  Hypnotic. Comfortable. Warm.
